Liberal Introspection Needed

Liberal means progressive. Progressive means changing the future. Change to a progressive liberal is the successful eradication of all things conservative. I am a conservative in case you had not guessed. I do not feel we should eradicate all things liberal. I too love the birds and the bunnies and the fish and the forests and clean air and clear water. I am against discrimination by race or religion or national origin. I believe we all benefit by helping the poor and infirmed. Etc. etc.

But, I have some questions of progressive liberals:

Why do you insist on killing babies for convenience?

Why do you support deviant sexual behavior and expect me to also support it?

Why do you insist on sex training for grade school children?

Why do you prevent parents from knowing about their own children’s pregnancies and abortions?

Why do you want God out of the public square?

Why do you love the animals more than people?

Why do you want more government control in all our lives?

Why do you fear and distain competition?

Why do you despise capitalism?

Why do you support frivolous lawsuits?

Why do you perpetuate the politics of envy between the rich and the poor?

Why do you love other countries cultures over our own?

Why do you fear religion?

Why do you want to make self-defense illegal?

Why do you not want to try everything possible to improve our schools?

I have this feeling that you do not even know the answers to these questions yourself. Oh, you have a few catch phrases wrapped in some sort of idea of utopia and idealism, sprinkled with comments about greed, racism and unfairness. But those do not wash. Please think introspectively and think your positions (listed above) through to their logical conclusion. Please understand the cumulative impact of the unintended consequences. If you do that, I believe you will become a staunch conservative with a foundation of logical liberal philosophy to maintain balance and help our country survive. Survival is optional. We need your help.

God Bless America, please.

Let me take a shot at responding. While I don't technically label myself as anything and would much prefer that people judge issues on their merits rather than what label "liberal", "conservative" they might be, I would like to fairly answer the questions.

I don't think anyone insists on killing babies for convenience. Abortion is surely a traumatic event for those who go through it. I understand the "pro-life" argument that life begins at conception and have struggled with whether it is the correct position. But many on the "pro-choice" side believe it is not a life until birth plus a child born to a mother and support system that is not ready is a one-way ticket to poverty and despair.

This argument can go on and on. And I will always struggle with it. But no one has abortions just for easy convenience.

>Why do you support deviant sexual behavior and expect me to also support it?

What people do behind closed doors is not my business. If two willing parties want to do what they want to do and no one gets hurt, that is fine with me.

THis may refer to homosexuality as what you are referring to as "deviant". I think there are plenty of heterosexuals who plenty of things that I might consider to be "deviant" as well. (I am not gay.)

THere are bigger problems than this.

>Why do you insist on sex training for grade school children?

My heart supports abstinence. But my head knows that kids at age 11 or 12 are going to realize changes in their bodies and going to be battling these urges. Is it better to not give them the information they need to understand what they are going through or somehow learning it piecemeal with potentially serious consequences. No sex ed program says get out there and procreate. It is simply better for the kids to know.

I am not sure grade school is the right time to learn about the main event but as they get closer to 6th grade, it is time to get some basic knowledge about the biology of reproduction.

Ignorance is not a good idea here.....and don't count on parents here. Many are afraid to talk about this....others are just plain lousy parents.

>Why do you prevent parents from knowing about their own children’s pregnancies and abortions?

My heart says they should.. My head says that in the real world, a child may face consequences in their own family life that may cause that child to put off getting the proper medical pre-natal care that is necessary. A pregnancy is hard to find and it will be found out sooner or later.

There are social issues that just cant be ignored here.

>Why do you want God out of the public square?

This nation was founded by people who were trying to escape from being persecuted by states with a predominant state religion.

And so when we look at the 1st Amendment, we assume that the founding fathers did not want the establishment of a state religion (and wanted people to freely practice religion at the same time).

We may worship God but we may worship God in many different ways. So the worship of God in a public square that a Christian might want is different from the method a Jew or Muslim might want God to be worshipped. Or a Buddhist or one who does not worship at all. By having a manger scene or Ten Commandments in a government place, the government is choosing its favorite religion.

>Why do you love the animals more than people?

This is probably aimed at the environmentalist movement. I am not sure that it is more or less but many believe that if a species goes, it will never come back and the earth will slowly die.

Sometimes we need to have planned environmental disaster areas, like oil refineries, Wal Marts, etc. But there has to be some balance and we are not sure the government has a sense of balance.

Why do you want more government control in all our lives?

Some would say the conservative movement wants more control....Censorship of obscenity on the airways or restricted rights for homosexuality, for example. I am not sure this is a cons vs. lib thing.

Why do you fear and distain competition?

Me, I like Wal Mart. It gives people, through lower prices a better lifestyle. I am not much of a protectionist and do not support the anti-globalists.

The problem though is what happens to those on the losing side...when their car plant is shut because they cant compete against some foreign competitor, for example. WHat can we do to help the losers in the battle.

And so my head supports free competition, my heart goes out to those who are on the wrong side of the score.

>Why do you despise capitalism?

See above.

>Why do you support frivolous lawsuits?

I don't support lawsuits out of greed. I think those examples get out of hand. I am a big fan of personal responsibility (smokers should know better)

BUt if some real tort, negligence, whatever occurs, there has to be some kind of mechanism to get restitution. Hence the need for the lawsuit.

>Why do you perpetuate the politics of envy between the rich and the poor?

I am not sure what this means. But our heart seeing the poor goes out to the them. And therefore, we want to develop programs that might help them. Some have. Some havent. Some have kept them from starving but then created their own problems.

But we hope they can get a better chance and that is why some may view libs on the side of the poor, beating up on the rich.

Of course, the rich don't help their cause...re the Enron and Worldcom scandals, for example.

>Why do you love other countries cultures over our own?

We find other countries interesting.. I am not sure we put other countries over our own.

>Why do you fear religion?

People have to find their own spirituality. When the choice they make is not the predominant choice, they worry that they are going to be ostracized or discriminated against. I know as a Jew, this is a concern for us, whether real in our community or not.

>Why do you want to make self-defense illegal?

We would prefer people not packing guns than packing guns. To much of a chance of something little turning into something big.

>Why do you not want to try everything possible to improve our schools?

I am not sure what "everything possible" is possible because people, whatever their persuasion have different views on what should be done. Higher taxes for smaller class sizes? Higher pay for teachers? More testing? Less testing?

>I have this feeling that you do not even know the answers to these questions yourself.

I think I do. I am pretty comfortable with my position and am pretty open about discussing and listening.

> Oh, you have a few catch phrases wrapped in some sort of idea of utopia and idealism, sprinkled with comments about greed, racism and unfairness.

I tried to write buzzword free. I would prefer to speak on issues rather than use language to sway issues emotionally.
