This just in from VCAP (via email):

Dear XXXX,

Don't vote Tuesday!

In 2004, the Virginia Republican State Central Committee passed a new party rule that states you may be barred from participating in future Republican conventions, mass meetings, and primaries if you have voted in a Democratic primary.

Please ensure your right to elect conservative Republican candidates in the 2007 Republican nomination process by NOT voting in the Democratic primary on Tuesday.

Thanks.

Not sure if this will become entangled in this.

UPDATED: Around 6:00 p.m. this afternoon VCAP sent out the below email with the subject "Clarification for vote tomorrow":

Dear XXXX,

Point of Clarification.

In 2004, the Virginia Republican State Central Committee passed a new party rule that states you could be barred from participating in future Republican conventions, mass meetings, and primaries if you have previously voted in a Democratic primary.

VCAP is a non-partisan PAC that supports fiscally and socially conservative candidates. We have no affiliation with the Republican Party of Virginia or decisions made by the State Central Committee. We merely wanted to pass along information we had learned of regarding changes to the Republican Party Plan and how it may affect your ability to vote in future Republican primary elections. We are recommending people reference the following blogs on Bacon’s Rebellion to better understand why State Central passed this amendment to the Party Plan in the first place:

http://www.baconsrebellion.co m/Issues06/05-30/Rodokanakis.php

You can clearly vote in whichever elections you choose. VCAP is not trying to suppress your vote. Rather, we wanted to share information with you that we had learned and how it could impact your ability to participate in future Republican primaries.

I hope this makes sense. Sorry for any confusion we may have caused.

Thanks.
Robin DeJarnette

Where did you get this from?

Recently I signed up for VCAP's email updates, thus I am now on VCAP's email distribution list... I got it in my inbox early this morning.

This is just too funny because Robin is also the director of the American Center for Voting Rights legislative fund which is supposedly a NON-Partisan organization. This type of voter suppression is dangerous, especially in a state with no Party registration. Since right now party registration is out of the question we as a party need to win with ideas, not voter intimidation tactics. This stuff gives out party a bad name and in my opinion is embarrassing.

I don't really see this as voter suppression... just information on RPV's recent actions and the possibility for closing primaries in the future. I actually appreciated the email from Robin.

If stating historical facts is voter suppression... then so be it.

Right now the facts say that Virginia is to have open primaries and by the way the judges questioned Cuccinelli I do not see this changing any time soon. Until this changes I believe VCAP is wrong in putting out this type of info. If we are the party of ideas then these tactics should not be necessary.

I think it was NLS who used this as a tactic to help a specific candidate (keeping the GOP from coming into the Democratic primary and voting for the weaker candidate)... but VCAP sent this just to help preserve people's right to vote in a Republican primary if they are Republican... not as some campaign tactic to advance one candidate (although it was to advance a broad conservative cause... that much I'll grant).

This wasn't some shady "tactic".

That should clear up any potential confusion - contrived or manufactured! :)

Cool stuff. Nothing left to see here!

Sophrosyne said:

Yeah... really not much of an issue anymore.

Much better, I am certainly glad they did this. They should have known better in the first place since they are run by professionals. I wonder what would have happended without the extensive blog coverage?
Thank Nova Town Hall for you excellent coverage. Without your coverage this gross error may never have been rightly corrected.

wincon,

Thank you for your praise... however I certainly doubt we can take much credit for the second statement... we're just a small fish in the VA blogosphere. VCAP is a class act and I am sure some VCAP members who read blogs were aware of the NLS issue and brought it to their attention.
