"Son of Russ Potts" to face Jill Holtzman Vogel and Mark Tate for 27th Senate GOP Nod?

I think I heard a whisper this past weekend, from the realm of the politically undead...

Recently (and finally!) resigned "Republican" Virginia Senator Russ Potts

potts.jpg

continues to confuse the swoons of liberal reporters, voter complacency, and the advantages of years of incumbency, with genuine popularity, even despite his measly media-inflated 2% of the vote in the 2005 Virginia Gubernatorial race. Potts promises to stay active in the fight to stop a supposed conservative drift (I don't see it in my tax bill, that's for sure) in the GOP. Former Middleburg Town Council member Mark Tate is pitted against former RNC attorney Jill Holtzman Vogel for the GOP nomination for that open seat.

I always check caller ID before picking up the phone. An ID like "541-868-1309 Venture Data3" isn't answered, as a rule, but this Sunday afternoon my curiosity got the best of me. To my wife's annoyance, and my fascination, I spent twenty minutes with a live pollster, her attempting to pin me down, and vice versa.

My conclusion?

A "Son Of Russ Potts",

someone with all of his liberalism yet lacking in his negatives, is soon to be unleashed on an unsuspecting Virginia 27th Senatorial District populace, hoping to slide past a split conservative ticket.

Now to the more memorable pollster questions concerning this race, as best as I can recall...

Q: Do you generally consider yourself a Republican, Democrat, or Independent?
A: Republican.

Q: What do you think of Governor Tim Kaine's job in office?
A: Not much.

Q: What's the year of your birth?
A: 1985

From here, where my responses aren't the least bit interesting, I'll just list the questions, as best as I can recall, and not likely in the order asked.

Q: Do you consider yourself strongly Republican?
Q: Do you vote often in Republican Primaries?
Q: Do you intend to vote in the upcoming 27th Senatorial District GOP primary?
Q: Do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice?
A: Pro-life.
Q: Which one of the following issues are you most motivated by in the upcoming primary: pro-life/family, anti-tax, anti-powerline, ... (I wondered when the woman would stop - the list was endless) ... illegal immigration, dispatching Zimzo in the same manner as "Piggy" in "Lord of the Flies" .... etc., etc. ?
A: I pick two - pro-life/family and anti-tax
Q: You can't do that.
A: Too bad.
Q: Which one of these two issues, then, will more strongly impact your vote in the upcoming primary?
A: (racking sound) ... next question if you would, please, m'am...
Q: Do you own any guns?
Q: How many?
Q: Do you attend church once or more per week, once a month, or less?
Q: Do you get most of your news from newspaper, radio, blogs, or Chick Tracts?
chicktract.gif ?

Q: If the upcoming 27th Senatorial District Republican Primary were to be held today, would you vote for Mark Tate or Jill Holtzman?
A: Undecided.

Q: Please listen to the following description of Mark Tate, and tell me whether it positively influences you toward voting for him (whatever it was, it was very positive but humdrum stuff that wasn't new and didn't stand out, except something about his valiant fight against evil powerlines) ....
A: It doesn't.

Q: Please listen to the following description of Jill Holtzman and tell me whether it positively influences you toward voting for him (same deal - very positive but didn't get my attention)
A: It doesn't.

At this point, it seemed a toss-up. Maybe Mark's PEC friends were paying for an independent effort, but then again who has the money to chase after and interrogate GOP voters across the entire district for twenty minutes? It must be Jill. The pollster insisted she didn't know who was paying the bills.

Q: Please listen to the following information regarding Mark Tate: Mark Tate's restaurant has been cited for violation of numerous state regulations, the Law of the Sea Treaty, and etc. Does this make you more or less inclined to vote for him?
A: More inclined.

Q: Please listen to the following information regarding Mark Tate: Mark Tate has received numerous traffic tickets. His victims number in the thousands, more than all the ptomaine victims tracked to his restaurant. He has also garnered numerous tax liens. Does this make you more or less inclined to vote for him?
A: More inclined.

Q: Please listen to the following information regarding Jill Holtzman: Jill Holtzman lives in a gated community and is buying the GOP nomination. Does this make you more or less inclined to vote for her?
A: More inclined.

Man how I wish I could have seen the pollster's face at this point!

Q: Please listen to the following information regarding Jill Holtzman: Jill Holtzman's husband is a lobbyist, and therefore she'd have to recuse herself from votes where there is a CONFLICT OF INTEREST. Does this make you more or less inclined to vote for him?
A: About the same.

Maybe I haven't seen everything, but it doesn't strike me that one of these two would pay someone to air dirty laundry of this sort.

So is Russ Potts' recent crowing about staying active politically in order to move his already high-tax Republican Party further to the political left a sign that he's found ... or created ... someone to take his place in the GOP primary?

1985???

You, my friend, are one of the most inscrutable individuals I've ever met.

And I must say your "more inclined" votes should be an inspiration to us all.

Rumors are flying around the district but, I have heard the Holtzman campaign did this as an issues type poll to find out what will work both for and against them. I think it was a silly waste of time and money. If the Holtzman people cannot figure our what will work by know they need to drop out.

Adding more credibility , they also send out a legislative survey in the mail asking were voters stood on issues and what they cared about. If Holtzman and her people were really in touch with the community they would not be polling for issues at this point in the campaign. Just my two cents. I think this is more a waste of money than anything else.
