The Weenie Wing, part 2
[See Part 1 of the Weenie Wing series]
More on the question of why John Andrews would take what seemed to be a significant advantage in momentum and whittle it down by signing on with the Republican weenie wing. This is particularly sad because John, I firmly believe, is not a weenie. He's a decent fellow and seems right on most of the issues - although not as good, in my book, as Patricia Phillips, that's how the democratic process goes: You get to support the person you most agree with. After that, you support the person you NEXT most agree with.
The Andrews campaign sent out numerous direct mail pieces this week, one of which featured photos of John with Virginia Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis and U.S. Senator John Warner.
Curious choices.
Ms. Devolites Davis established herself as part of the "part of the problem" segment of the Virginia GOP by siding with the majority in a Virginia Senate committee, aka "den of thieves," who killed an important House bill that would have helped ameliorate the negative effects of illegal aliens in this state.
HB 2937 would have closed a loophole that allows taxpayer funds to be provided to illegal aliens through non-profit organizations. It is already state law that illegal aliens are not eligible to receive most government benefits. Presumably Ms. Devolites Davis believes, along with Democratic Senator Mark Herring, that Virginia is so rolling in tax dough that we have no legal residents who might need that assistance. Following the beneficent logic of Mr. Herring and Ms. Devolites Davis, maybe we should just divert our entire budget to foreign aid.
Senator Warner voted for last year's Senate bill S. 2611, the "treasonous weasels bill," which would have dramatically increased immigration from south of the border and required the U.S. to consult with the Mexican government before constructing any type of border security. (Look at section 117). More here.
Oddly, John's newspaper ads state he is the "only" candidate in the 33rd district Senate race with a strong position on illegal immigration. Frankly, judging by the company he keeps and the substance of his statements, he has some work to do to back that up.
Below the fold is Patricia Phillips' latest statement on dealing with the illegal alien crisis in Northern Virginia.
Next installment: The most welcome hit piece ever, courtesy of a John Andrews supporter.
Statement from 33rd district Senate candidate Patricia Phillips:
I believe in the rule of law. Legal immigrants built our country and continue to contribute to our nation and its economy. We should not forget that the willingness of immigrants to work hard has been a major force in the building of our country from the days of the frontier until today. However, the nation, and our 33rd district specifically, are suffering from the exploitation of illegal aliens, security threats, criminal elements, unlicensed and uninsured drivers, unpaid emergency room visits, and the danger of "catch and release" programs. We should not allow those who disregard our laws to receive special taxpayer funded benefits or get fast-track citizenship ahead of those seeking to immigrate legally. The primary responsibility for immigration policy is at the federal level. That notwithstanding, we can do more to encourage immigrants to settle in Virginia legally, and deter illegal presence. While it is against the law to hire illegal aliens, there is no enforcement. Hiring illegal aliens forces down wages of entry-level Virginia workers, and gives an unfair competitive advantage to employers who violate our labor laws. I will work to give the state and local governments the tools to enforce the laws we have and as needed propose new laws to discourage the employment of illegal aliens. We need to protect the jobs and businesses of law-abiding Virginians.
As your state Senator, I would:
-Propose legislation that all state government contracts for construction, goods and services include certification that the contractor hires no illegal immigrants, and that there is a verification process to enforce the contract language.
-Propose legislation to address the dangers of unlicensed drivers on our roads.
-Support BICE (Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement) training for Virginia State law enforcement.
-Support legislation so that only legal residents can get in-state tuition at Virginia colleges.I deeply respect the many lawful immigrants who have come here, learned our language, contributed to our culture and helped build our society. We need to welcome those who seek a better life here without placing unnecessary roadblocks in their way. In order to rectify the discrepancy between illegal immigration and lawful immigration, the federal government must make the lawful immigration process less costly, less complicated and less bureaucratic. I will work to protect the back door from illegal immigration, and to repair the front-door for legal immigration.
