Bolling Update

GENERAL ASSEMBLY RACES LOOM LARGE
Lieutenant Governor Bolling working to retain GOP majorities in 2007
September 19, 2007
This fall, all 140 seats in the Virginia General Assembly will stand for re-election. At stake is the Republican Party’s majority status in the State Senate and the House of Delegates. These elections are very important to the future of Virginia.
Currently, Republicans hold a 23-17 advantage in the State Senate and a 57-40 advantage in the House of Delegates, with three Independents. However, Virginia Democrats are emboldened by their victory in the 2006 U.S. Senate campaign, and they are convinced that this is the year they can retake control of the General Assembly. We cannot allow that to happen.
As the fall campaign season begins, I am working hard to make certain that the GOP retains control of the Senate and House of Delegates. Between now and election-day, I will make dozens of appearances on behalf of Republican candidates in every part of the state. I will be helping them raise money and effectively communicate their message to voters. A list of the events we have scheduled between now and election day follows.
In addition, and through my 100 Ideas For The Future of Virginia initiative, I am encouraging Virginia Republicans to get back to being the party of issues and ideas. In preparation for the fall campaigns, I have conducted 50 Town Hall Idearaisers across the state, listening to the concerns of Virginia residents and business leaders. I believe we have been able to put together a solid platform for victory this November.
Virginia is a great place to live, work and raise a family, but we face some significant challenges in our state today. Our job, as this generation of Virginia political leaders, is to offer a positive vision for the future - a vision that focuses on the issues families and businesses care about most.
By offering specific proposals to improve public education, combat gang violence and drugs, make higher education and health care more affordable, build a transportation system for the 21st century without raising taxes, and deal aggressively with the problem of illegal immigration on the state level, I believe we can convince Virginia voters that the GOP has the right vision for the future.
While our Republican Party is not perfect, we have accomplished a great deal in Virginia . We can be proud of the fact that we tackled tough problems like abolishing parole, reforming welfare and demanding higher academic standards in the public schools. And we should not forget that it was because of our leadership that our state has been recognized as the best governed state in America and the most pro-business state in the nation.
The Democrats have a very different vision for the future of our state. The Democrats who have been elected to the General Assembly in the past decade are among the legislatures most liberal members. If they take control of the General Assembly our state will take a sharp turn to the left, and that is not where most Virginians want us to be.
We’ve worked too hard in these past ten years to allow the Democrats to take us back to a time when taxes were too high, test scores were too low, crime was rampant, and welfare for life was expected. All they’ve accomplished is breaking their campaign promises and raising taxes, and that’s not what the people of Virginia want.
In the weeks to come I am going to do everything I can to make certain that voters understand the difference between our vision for the future of Virginia and the Democrats vision for the future of Virginia. If they do, I’m confident that they will continue to vote for us and give us the privilege of leading Virginia . I hope you will join me in this effort and become actively involved in key legislative campaigns in your area.
